“In life, as in football, you won't go far unless you know where the goalposts are.”

321 Rules

321 Non-negotiable Fundamental Rules:

This entire page is written in bold text for a reason; I want you all to understand that these are the fundamental rules for you all to follow, all the time.

Rule: Warm-up drills are played unopposed, with a football at all times (no running around the pitch twice for a warm-up). Start with a light passing practice between the players with NO TACKELING. Then gradually increase the intensity and pace on the ball to bring the players up to playing speed, while practising using both feet all of the time. The warm-up should take no longer than 5 – 10 minutes.

Rule: Always play small-sided games during practice, 5 players maximum per team. Its also a great idea to break the games down into 3 or 4 -aside sessions, so the players get more touches of the ball during practice. Thus sharpening their skill sets and making them react quicker (reduce pitch size to suit the number of players). Playing small-sided games dramatically improves the fitness of the individual players as there is more intense practice taking place. This is very noticable after a short time.

Rule: Start the game with a halfway kick-off as usual.

Rule: When an attack has been completed and the ball either goes over the dead ball line or if a goal is scored, the attacking team must retreat at pace, back to the halfway line. This simulates a football “transition” between the two teams. The halfway line is identified on the pitch with different coloured cones. This enables a quick restart from the goalkeeper who rolls the ball out to one of his own players. As soon as a teammate touches the ball, this signifies to the opposing side (who are on the halfway line) to restart the game.

Rule: The ball must be played on the ground at all times (nothing over knee height). With accurate passing to both feet, all of the time. The ball is so much easier to control when delivered to your feet and along the ground. This gives you so much more time to complete your next move. Now think about this last statement, logically if the ball is easier to control, the next pass can be made more quickly to your teammate and with more accuracy, thus retaining more possession. Therefore gaining your team more advantage and more time. The ultimate outcome is that the ball is moved forward incisively to the midfield/strikers, therefore creating more goalscoring opportunities and ultimately, win more games.

Rule: There are no throw in’s. The ball is placed stationary on the touch-line and then kicked to another team member as in Futsal. Opposition players must retreat 5 meters from the ball to allow the restart of play.

Rule: There are no goal kicks or corners.

Rule: After a player has had 3 touches of the ball, the player cannot touch the ball again until ANY other player has touched it. The player can, however, use their body to shield the ball from the opposition. Using your body to shield the ball from the opposition players simulates what happens during a game, so it is very useful to learn this skill.

Rule: Take frequent breaks for re-hydration, based on the number of players.

Rule: When you can see any players physically lagging, take them out of practice and recover. Not all players are as fit as each other.

Rule: Try to keep your players (as much as possible) at the same ability level, within the same training group. You can move players between groups to even up the teams.

Rule of thumb: Always encourage your players to receive the ball looking forward, if possible. It is far easier to play a quick, incisive pass to another teammate, if you are looking in the same direction as you want the ball to travel.
